Rename Like a Pro - Batch renaming files and why this is important

One of the surprising things that I have come across after many years of teaching photography is the number of photographers who don’t rename their image files. Renaming should be an integral part of the digital workflow as it helps immeasurably with being able to store and - more importantly - find your photos.

The video is divided into two parts: first a discussion of why we name and some best practice ideas, and second how to batch rename photos in Capture One Pro (although all image editors offer similar batch renaming).

Timeline:

00:00 Introduction
01:25 How the camera names files
02:12 Setting camera sequence naming
02:48 The problem with default camera file naming
03:54 Importance of renaming files so each photo is unique
04:21 Types of renaming: Job Lot & Chronological
06:20 Adding metadata tags for better file naming
07:39 My file naming method
10:33 Adding Metadata with Capture One
13:45 Batch renaming with Capture One
14:22 Building renaming templates with Capture One
17:27 Summary and Conclusion

What an informative video and so well explained and demonstrated. I do use folders with date, location but didn’t think about adding information into metadata and batch editing the raw files. I’ve neglected renaming to .CR3 and only named the editing .tif and .jpg (full and low res). I’m going to do that from now on in Bridge if it allows a batch edit on the name.
I back up all my folders onto external ssd drives and an addition back up that’s kept on different premises…
Your video is super clear on my TV screen.
Look forward to the next one.

Emil, This is a great video thanks. I really appreciate the information as I am finding it hard to come up with a good naming convention. Would you kindly do a detailed video on folder naming and why? Thanks again. Bryan
