Fossil Fuels - GCSE Physics

This video explains fossil fuels in more detail. Coal, oil and gas store a large amount of chemical energy and have traditionally been used to generate our electricity, although there are a number of drawbacks to their use.
Fossil fuels are burnt, releasing thermal energy. This is then used to heat up water, turning it to steam. The steam then turns a turbine which is connected to a generator, generating electricity. When fossil fuels are burnt they release greenhouse gasses which harm the environment. However, fossil fuel power stations can be started up very quickly in order to keep up with demand.
