Anne is a Man At Sea
Written by Karliene Reynolds - The Legend of Anne Bonny

Violin by Jesse Grandmont
Pirate Voices by Webster Music

-- | LYRICS |--

Dressed in a pair of calico pants
And a cutlass by my side
Off I sailed with Jack and his men

To live that pirate life
But a woman on a ship is a cursed thing
So a man I had to be
I couldn't care less to be free of corsets
As a man I felt like me

She can hoist the ropes
And down the rum
Plough the briny sea
But a woman on a ship is scandalous
So Anne is a man at sea

Hoist the ropes
And down the rum
Here a man be free
But a woman on a ship is scandalous
So Anne is a man at sea

Sp dressed in a pair of calico pants
And me red hair tied back low
They called me Tom the pirate lad
And welcomed me aboard

But every night in his cabin
Jack and I would meet
'Cause I still liked being a woman
His lover Anne Bonny

She can hoist the ropes
And down the rum
Plough the briny sea
But a woman on a ship is scandalous
So Anne is a man at sea

Hoist the ropes
And down the rum
Here a man be free
But a woman on a ship is scandalous
So Anne is a man at sea

Dressed in a pair of calico pants
Did they doubt or did they know?
Did they catch Tom the pirate lad's
Belly start to grow?

I somewhat thought one second it would be about Jeanne de Clisson. She was a medieval woman pirate who took the sea to avenge her husband. Interesting character.
Great song, btw.

Just listened to all 3 songs you have out so far.
It's crazy how well this story is told. I can clearly picture a musical! Beginning with Anne and her crew drinking and singing at a tavern with their new found gold before being captured and thrown into prison. They are still singing even as Anne goes to Jack and fades away. Then the crew is hanged.

Then, I picture Anne singing to herself and her children with her slowly growing older. Beginning with her singing to her first child then all 8 then maybe ending with her looking into a fire with her grandchildren surrounding her.

Then I picture Anne beginging her journey.

Great song! I can really believe you are singing as Anne Bonny herself. The descriptions in the song help a lot and the backing track really hammer home that aesthetic.

Just to clarify guys, Anne wasn't Trans. She had to act like this to not be shunned out of the pirate life.

Jack may not have been much of a fighter but he was useful for a lot of other things, however none of that helped him in the end.

Amazing song, I'll put that up in my D&D session when we see 'Anne Bunny'. Literally an Eastern Egg of Anne Bonny, but fantasy version. We have Neko-like races and Anne Bunny is one of the Rabbit ones. She's also a massive legend there and Bunny women are often teased due to their kin. While women on ships are rather normal in that universe due too many cultures being straightly matriarchal while others are more patriarchal, her kin does experience racism/Bigotry so I guess its a different fight but still a struggle from one Anne to an other.

I loved this song and the one before. Are you going to do another talking about her other love Mary Reed? Cause poly bisexual pirates are amazing.

Ooo, I really love this one. Perfect fit for her, for pirates in general, and for the sea. I cannot wait for the album. I will be buying on day one.

I am so HYPED for the full album! The original Anne Bonny song is one of my favorites. It almost feels like you are making a Anne Bonny musical, which is wonderful!

My first ever D&D campaign was all about the sea, travelling by ship in a giant archipelago. I was pretty naive and new to D&D, so it didn't have much depth (ahah, sea joke), but now I've started a new campaign, the sequel to my first one. I've planned for the party to meet a character inspired by Mary Read, and one inspired by Anne Bonny in the future. I can not deny that this album inspired me so much, and it still does. I'm really looking towards putting some of your songs, Karliene, in my D&D sessions. I love every song of your discography, because I can hear you put tons of passion, research and time into your songs.
Just like Anne Bonny and Mary Read, you are an absolute beast at what you do. Big up, sis.

I am so going to pretend I'm Anne and find a large stick to use as a cutlass once this entire album comes out! The ending of this song gave me goosebumps!🖤
