1/8" increments on the pencil drag is the main reason the Swanson pro takes the trophy. The 1.5" mark is just a bonus.

If you stack the top two nailed plates through out the entire house ( for instance a single story) on top of your shoe, you can layout studs, ceiling joists and rafters all from the safety of the deck.

Ive never seen someone mark both sides of a stud

That's cause most carpenters are smart enough to know that you only need one side of the 2x4 position marked with an X near it

Speed square is also used as a roofing reference

Oh the old Swanson TV dinner square? It worked to do what you were doing with the new square.

The new square is only there to attract people like yourself who don't know how to use the old one.

Also they're much better better squares out there, we only used the Swanson TV dinners square back in the day because it was the only metal one that you could get for a while without spending an arm and a leg.

Why would you need 2 lines for stud layout?...

One line right at 16" You REALLY should be able to eyeball the center of a 2x.

Anyone who has ever framed knows you don’t mark the 16 in center marks….you just back up 3/4

A competent framer can lay out the "common" studs with just a center mark.

If youre on a well trained crew you dont need to do all that

I mean, you just, pull 15 1/4 and then 31 1/4
