In this video DidYouKnowGaming takes a look at anti-piracy measures in several Nintendo 64 titles, such as Banjo-Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, and the N64 classic The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Special thanks to all the data miners and curious individuals who researched these anti-piracy measures on TCRF and beyond, including Jrra, Ferrox, and RyanDwyer.

Imagine getting all the way to Ganondorf's tower only for Zelda to ditch you in the end.

"it would make a great speedrun"
I like how speedrun catagories have progressively moved from Any% runs and tool assisted runs to any kind of twist that increases the runner's suffering.

Wow 12 years to crack a game's anti-piracy, that's damn impressive

I really like when you guys talk about history of anti piracy, its really fun to learn about this stuff.

Rare was certainly creative in their anti-piracy measures. Perhaps a bit extreme in hindsight, but it's impressive Banjo 2 took over a decade to fully crack. Interesting stuff!

I feel like the channel is doing really well considering the downturn in interest in gaming trivia videos. Maybe it's just me, maybe I'm not so into the scene as much anymore, but I feel like when I was 14 (when I first found gaming trivia and started learning cool facts and stuff) there was so much to learn and talk about. But now it feels like everythings been talked about. And it's hard to talk about new things. But y'all have really stepped up to a scene that's losing speed, and have continued to keep putting out interesting facts and trivia. I like the channel, while others have lost me over time. You're doing a good job with what I feel like is a hard industry.

I love how Zelda goes right through the bars and abandons Link. Sounds like she’s not a fan of piracy either.

Was getting really tired of all those fake, clickbaity “spooky anti-piracy measure” videos that plague YouTube, so this was a massive breath of fresh air. Thank you.

Okay, the Ocarina of Time part was an absolute troll move from Nintendo towards Pirates.
Only minor incovinience and weirdness right until the finally of the game, which is the moment it is revealed you wont finish it is such a huge slap for everyone using a pirated copy of the game.

Imagine not knowing you have a pirated version of Ocarina and Zelda just runs off leaving you to die 🤣🤣🤣

The channel is going very well :) still my favorite relaxation channel for when the world is overwhelming me. Saw this video and knew it’d be a good one!

I've always believed the theory that these antimeasures were in place to make pirates admit to their piracy in public. Like somebody posting on a official forum to ask "Why aren't the bars moving up when I play LoZ" and you instantly know that they've pirated the game.

Love the content people! I’ve been a fan of channel for a while and you still manage to surprise me constantly. It’s pretty fun. I’m also getting into game development, so learning about the process, even the not so fun ones such as this, is really rich. Thanks for the great work!

When threatened, Zelda can spit venom up to 25 ft.

You’re one of my favorite voices on YouTube. Both soothing and entertaining, which is a rare combination.

The DK 64 Anti piracy method is pretty genius when you realize the game will naturally freeze itself up if the console is constantly on.

Well if you want Feedback:
I've really enjoyed this modern era of DYKG, you guys have been doing a great job at objectively & accurately conveying information without sounding like you're reading off of a Wikipedia article, and I've particularly enjoyed the episodes you've narrated.
I think the only Episode's I haven't enjoyed were "Super Smash Bros Mistakes" (Which ironically had some mistakes of it's own) and "Nintendo's Game & Watch" (Again, due to some errors in that episode that, being an avid Game & Watch Enthusiast, put me off), aside from those episodes though I've really enjoyed pretty much everything you guys have been putting out, even videos about games or topics that I haven't played or have interest in, and you've even surprised me with tons of new info I was unaware of!
All in all, you guys are doing a great job, so keep it up!

I got a copy of Banjo Tooie that periodically deletes one of my savefiles. I had always assumed the previous owner had done some sort of hacking that triggered this as a defense measure. I was still able to beat the game by continuously copying to other savefiles as backup, but it was a constant threat that the next time I'd boot it up, the file I'd been using could be gone before I had a chance to copy it.
