Northern Stargazer fish

Caught this Stargazer at sandy hook, NJ. We let him go. Beware if you catch one, thy can shock you if you touch them right between the eyes.

I caught one today- my first fish ever- and no one knew what it was either until a local fisherman (and cop) came and told us not to touch it. We let him go, but it was a pretty cool catch for my first fish ever! :)

Looks like a cross between Christopher Walken and a maori sculpture.

@mstran29 Oh really? I think the next time I catch one, I will try it. However when handling this guy while alive, could I just use a rag or something on him the same way I handle fluke, to prevent from being shocked, is using a towel not enough insulation prevent me form being shocked. The only way I got him out of the live well was with a needle nose and pulled him from his top fin, really fast and into the water.

To my understanding, if you touch the HEAD of the fish, you can get shocked bad. It is strongly advised, that you try to avoid doing so. Otherwise, you will get shocked enough in which you will not be in good shape, for the rest of the day.

I hear yea, when I first caught one, when I was on a party boat. Everyone was telling me "Touch it! Touch it!" I figured something was up. One of the ship’s crewmates told me that it was a good thing I did not touch it. Otherwise I would be in bad shape the rest of the day fishing, if I got shocked.

Are they in Panama City beach fl if they at I saw one and thought it was a shell and almost touched it but it opened its eyes and mouth I looked up stargazer fish and it looked exactly like what I saw

can you get shocked by one without touching it? I caught a little one and it was moving back and forth and something was flying off it and touched my leg and it stung
