Sleep Training Tips for Your 1 Year Old

Is your 1 year old waking up at night? Is your toddler waking up early in the morning or fighting naps and bedtime? Maybe it's time to transition to one nap, maybe it's caused by the 18 month sleep regression or other common toddler sleep problems. This video explains how to get your toddler sleeping well by following 3 essential steps and has expert sleep training tips to help your 1 year old sleep through the night.

In this video I'm gonna explain how you can get your 1 year old toddler sleeping amazingly.

Your toddler's night wakings, his fighting bedtime or refusing to nap will all continue until you take active steps to teach him to sleep well. And at 1 year old this is totally possible. Your toddler can be expected to sleep 10, 11 or 12 hours straight at night and nap for 2-3 hours every day. You just have to show him how.

My 3 big tips for getting your one-year-old sleeping well are to start a relaxing bedtime routine, teach your toddler to fall asleep on their own and stick to a consistent daily schedule.

Start a relaxing bedtime routine.
A consistent bedtime routine helps children fall asleep easier at bedtime, sleep longer stretches at night and improves maternal mood. And because it's a relaxing for your baby and helps her sleep well it's something that you want to do every day. You can keep up with your bedtime routine when your toddler is sick, when you're traveling, when she's teething or even when she's going through a regression. It's a calming ritual that helps her body relax so she can welcome sleep. You may be unintentionally causing your toddler to wake during the night by having the wrong bedtime routine. The activities that you do and the order in which you do them makes all the difference with whether your toddler is going to sleep through the night or not.
In my Exhausted Mom's Starter Kit I walk you through the steps of a bedtime routine that sets your toddler up to sleep amazingly at night.

Teach your toddler to fall asleep on their own.
The way that your toddler falls asleep at bedtime is the way that he needs to fall back to sleep each time he wakes during the night. And waking or stirring during the night is completely normal. If you help your toddler fall asleep at bedtime by rocking or feeding him to sleep then he's gonna need your direct help each and every time he wakes during the night. And you know this because you may be up
several times with your toddler right now which is really exhausting. But when your toddler can go into his crib awake and settle himself to sleep on his own at bedtime he'll be able to resettle himself each time he wakes at night.

In 21 Days to Peace and Quiet I help parents choose the right method for teaching their toddler to fall asleep on his own. I give parents a range of methods and then I help them pick the one that's best for their family.

A consistent sleep schedule helps your one-year-old sleep well because their body clock is set to sleep at predictable times every day. When you're a little ones naps and bedtime happen at the same time every day sleep will come easier for her she'll fall asleep nice and easy and sleep long stretches.

Now sleep schedules don't have to be complicated. The first thing to remember is to wake your toddler up at the same time every morning. The second thing is to follow recommended awake times. If your toddler still naps twice a day then follow awake times of 3-4 hours. If your toddler naps once a day follow awake times of 4.5 - 5.5 hours. And lastly make sure your toddler's bedtime doesn't vary by more than 20 minutes every night.

My one-year-old sleep guide on my website gives you advice for common sleep problems like: "my toddler's waking up at 5 am every day", "how can I transition to one nap a day", "how can I switch my toddler from sleeping in the crib to sleeping in the toddler bed", "my toddler is fighting bedtime or fighting naps", "my toddler still wakes during the night" and the 18 month sleep regression.

I have done all of the things that you suggested and my almost 14 month old is regularly waking up through the night 3-4times and crying for a bottle. I do want to mention that we co-sleep with him and he is down to one nap per day.

Hey there! Love your videos! I read the 2-1 nap transition article on your website and was looking here for advice.
Is it ok to temporarily have a bedtime earlier than 6pm if necessary? Until she can take a longer midday nap?

Current schedule: Wake 7-7:30am, Nap 1 10:30-11:30am, Nap 2 should be 3:30-4pm but on and off she's been rejecting this for 2+ weeks and some days she ends up sleeping at 8:30pm because her catnap ends at 4:30pm. I tried keeping her awake till 6pm one time and she was a monster (lol), sooo tired the poor thing.

Yeah this is all fine and dandy but my kid does not want to participate AT ALL. Its easy to say “when a baby falls asleep on their own in the crib” but when my kid has cried hysterically for an hour then what… shes in a habit of sleeping in our bed… and napping with us. She follows a schedule but soon as I put her in that crib… nahhh screaming constantly

Hi, what do you mean by wake times per my naps? So if they nap twice a day then they should be awake 4 hours in between naps?

Hi, thanks for the information - it gives me hope to help my 1yr old put himself to sleep. My question is how do I teach him to fall asleep on his own without nursing or being rocked?

We started sleep training and she will not lay down for 2 1/2 hours until she pretty much passes out. She is “sleeping” standing up. Any tips? When we go do our check in, we lay her down once, but she gets up.

Thanks for the helpful tips. My 11 month old is used to sleeping with a pacifier. she can put herself to sleep as long as she has her pacifier. Now we want her to stop using pacifier. she doesn't know how to sleep without it and is crying nonstop without sleeping. How can we help her learn to sleep by without the pacifier? should we rock her to sleep without paci first and then train her to sleep on her own?

I live in an apartment now and I have been giving in to his crying because I dont want to wake the neighbors. To be fair he was sleeping really well when I stayed with my mom for 3 months bit we have gone through a lot of transition & have only been settled into our apartment for a week soon...but as soon as I put him in his crib he starts hollering for me to get him out...I need to clean up his habits because he has been falling asleep watching tv with me until 11 and this is NOT what I ever intended..it breaks my heart because I want him to go back to his 8:30 schedule and sleep peacefully.

I haven’t yet found a sleep coach who can tell me why my 15 month old is able to self-settle during the night when she wakes crying, but then she starts crying again after 5-15 minutes. So, she seems to settle, but really she’s lying there awake, then starts crying again. She’ll do this for as long as it takes…. Help!!!

Hello, any advice for a single mom who works the graveyard shift? I have to be at work by 9pm so I try to get her into bed by atleast 730 so she's at least relaxed for the sitter and by the time I get off at 9 the next morning she's already up for that hour🤧 I'm not sure how I can do this properly
