Why bubble wrap bubbles pop?

Bubble wrap was originally invented as a type of textured wallpaper. In 1957, engineers Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes were attempting to create a three-dimensional plastic wallpaper with a paper backing. Although the textured wallpaper idea didn't catch on, they discovered that their creation had an unexpectedly enjoyable secondary use as a packaging material due to its excellent cushioning and protective properties.
