WOW man. Your research project on bullying in Cyprus sounds very interesting. I can tell you as a person who is from Cyprus, your project touches the lives of many people here on the island. By the way, I am currently a BA student in English language and literature at the University of Cyprus who's looking into the possibility of an academic career. Your video was helpful. Thanks

What school was in North Carolina? Great video! I would say investigating the passion is the biggest thing. You gotta love what you do, and do what you love.

These benefits are not universal and are dependant on the university you work at so watch out!

#1 You get to educate the next generation. True but I had to educate many postgraduate MDs who were there not to do research but complete requirements for their residencies. Most were really not that interested.
#2 You get to investigate your passion. Well sort of but mostly driven by where the NIH funding opportunities existed
#3 You get to travel worldwide and meet lots of like-minded people. True I got invited to and attended a lot of meetings in the US and in Europe and I did meet a lot of nice people, but I also met a lot of rude competitor assholes. I think if I had been paid a decent salary by my university/granting agency, I would have preferred visiting foreign countries as a tourist rather than a visiting academic.
#4 You get to take a sabbatical. No that is not a universal truth.
#5 You get to work on a college campus. Well Ok but the laboratories at my campus were over 30 years old and not up to date, state of the art. The labs were dingy and run down...even the water quality was terrible ( you need good water to biochemistry and HPLC etc). I had a few nice colleagues, but most collaborations were exploitative, getting raf less in return than what I contributed.

These observations are the result of an independent fully NIH grant funded University career from 1990 to 2020.
