I love each cultures approach to your personal trauma on reality TV. Like in Korea you tell a sad story about yourself they’re gonna show it from 10 different angle, they replay you breaking down 5 different times, sad music, everyone around you goes and text on the screen will literally pop up and say something like “so sad!! 😢”.

Ah, you ain’t seen nothing until you see Indian reality shows that squeeze the last drop of the contestant’s misfortune.

When Bake Off started the producers wanted it to be the "make them cry about their dead grandma" type of show that does so well in the USA, but the original presenters Mel and Sue didn't like that at all. At the time Bake Off was on the BBC and BBC shows aren't allowed to name brands (because it's the national broadcaster and so publicly funded so they're not allowed to "advertise" a brand by naming it) so when the producers tried to film contestants getting upset or crying Mel and Sue would go and stand next to the contestant saying brand names and curse words so the footage couldn't be used.
Now Mel and Sue are gone we see more Bake Off seasons where that kind of footage is included, which is one of the reasons why it doesn't feel as nice any more.

Normally I say I like British competition shows better because there’s a certain camaraderie vs American which is a lot more cutthroat but now that you mention that lack of personal story exploitation that makes a lot of sense too😅😅
I don’t know how people don’t find it depressing when person after person comes on an American reality show and basically goes “yeah my spouse and I work 6 full time jobs between the two of us with over 100 hour work weeks and still can’t afford our young kids surgery so I’m here to exploit myself to win the money my family desperately needs to survive”

Face off had a girl with something that attacked her nerves and caused pain....and it was only mentioned during the finally.

The producers asked her if she wanted stuff she could use with her hand but she turned it down because she didn’t think it was fair to the other competitors 😊

Matteo is so good at the casual delivery and the fact that he does not even make those people up. He just tells a story around something he actually saw and its funny.

So true American shows are crazy, Extreme Makeover Home Edition springs to mind. Not only were there 10 adopted children, their house burnt down, the husband died and the mums now a paraplegic

that is a well workshopped bit. The timing and delivery of the "never brought it up" and the "yeah" is great. I just watched my first episode of bake off after
