The paste is an electrolyte paste made of Manganese oxide which reacts with a zinc anode on the bottom of the battery (the flat side). The rod inside is a graphite cathode which acts an an "inert electrode" which basically means that electrons move through it (the side of the battery with a bump on it). The reaction between the manganese compound and the zinc is what makes the electrons that move through the battery which is the "electricity". The battery itself is made of steel so it doesn't react with any of the compounds.

As a kid my mom always said there was “battery juice” in batteries that would get drank from the thing using the battery for power

Pro tip: use a pipe cutter and some pliers works like a miracle in comparison to what you were doing.

Get some needle-nose pliers. I've opened AA batteries with those and it was easy. Also, when I've opened AA batteries, there was a stack of small button-batteries inside which is much cheaper than buying the button-batteries. There wasn't any paste...weird.
