Tardigrades: *survive 120 years without water before being reanimated*

40, 000-year-old nematodes: Oh, that's cute.

Glad they will run further tests to verify the dates. Permafrost occassionally thaws a bit, making it possible for nematodes to be more mobile and cross into a different deposit layer than their original.

Have to agree that worms really are the peak of evolution. We can't even hope to compete.

The foulest stench is in the air
The funk of forty thousand years
And grizzly ghouls from every tomb
Are closing in to seal your doom
And though you fight to stay alive
Your body starts to shiver
For no mere mortal can resist
The evil of the thriller

It's the most wonderful time of the year! By which we all mean Worm Week.

Genetic analysis of the revived worms vs the current living populations is key to understanding and providing evidence for these actually being revived from 30 to 40000 years ago.

They lived when our ancestors just started to paint in caves. The same worms are are still alive. Totally mind bending!

Question is, can the modern males of either species mate with the ancient females and produce offspring which are viable?

I hope I'm not the only one that immediately thought of that one X-files episode with the parasitic worms that make anything infected hyper-aggressive. That was my favorite episode.

Here I was thinking the first case of De-extinction would be a mammoth or smth when in reality it’ll probably be some old worm

This is very interesting - even with the skepticism.
Thank you for bringing this forward...it's quite unique!

Did they, in fact, find any bacteria???
