The Future Of Commander - Banlist Updates, Rule Zero & Brackets

Yesterday we had the WeeklyMTG stream discussed to bring us an update to Monday's announcement of WOTC taking over the EDH Banlist.

The biggest reason why there is separate ban list is because if it’s legal they can reprint it to sell sets.

Separating by bracket is easier than most think.

Bracket 1 - CAG
Bracket 2 - RC
Bracket 3 - WotC
Bracket 4 - Hasbro

I'd love to see "banned as commander" make a comeback. The complaint is complexity, but it's really not that hard. Most of the legends on banned list would be fine in the 99.

I think my favorite comment about fast mana is "every land you put into play after your first is an extra turn"

For 3-4 years, dockside, jeweled lotus was left unbanned. Mana crypt was left unbanned for so much longer

The RC wasnt exactly the most active "check and balance on wotc" people claim they were. If wotc takes over and pushed fast mana is left unbanned - well, we're back at where we started to begin with anyway.

I don't think there will be a mass unbanning. Instead, i think wotc will create a home for the banned cards. Something like "vintage commander" or bracket 5 gets added with a different ban list.

I am a bit hesitant but this could be absolutely amazing. I imagine pushed staples like Dauthi Voidwalker will be tier 3. I assume most pods play at tier 3 already, but someone might be piloting their less competitive commander and the space for power 2 could be a whole new world for excited deck builders.


I imagine super staples like Dauthi Voidwalker/Jeska's Will/Mystic Remora will be tier 3.

I think they should still be able to unban Jeweled and Crypt. The ones who didn’t make threats should not have to suffer cause a few players acted in such way.

I'm sure some people might have stronger feelings about this, but I'm just exhausted: If they don't reverse the bans I just cannot bring myself to care either way until either that happens or new cards get as pushed as some of the banned ones for me to replace them and keep working on decks and ideas I had without feeling like I'm just being limited by this *!@#*# drama, I rather be done with the hobby for at least a while.

We don't need brackets if we have an official ban list, which we now have since Commander is now controlled by Wizards.

I think the tier system is a good idea. Most of the things I've heard brought against it in the discord is stuff that's already a problem with the current rule zero system. This is meant to be a soft system that helps players have a conversation. And then 4 tier essentially will be cedh and cards that are to powerful to be played at a random table. This system isn't gonna be perfect but it'll be a lot better then the current situation for a lot of people.

I believe they mentioned sol ring would be bracket 1, which makes sense given the goals they set so far. I'm curious to see where this system goes. Appreciate the content and measured response.

They will fuck up the format. They can't handle the formats they originally had. The killed standard for a bit. They broke our trust by doing what they said they'd never do. They will ruin commander. Im already ready to disassemble my 15 commander decks bc I know how this is going to go.

I think if we compare the tantrum of the loud minority the same way we treat handling tantrums of your toddlers, then it's important to remember that just like you don't give in to a child to avoid reinforcing that behavior you don't give in to people threatening others because it reinforces that behavior.
