How I Got Undergraduate Research as a Premed for Medical School

In this video, I talk about How I Got Undergraduate Research as a Premed for Medical School. I applied to over 400 research positions right when i started my premed journey because I knew research would strengthen my medical school application and make me a better applicant. I heard back from about half of the 400 of the ones I applied to either saying they're full or they'll consider me and was accepted at around 35 positions (half being ones I wasn't interested in) and the other half being actual good positions that could help consolidate my future career choice in medicine. Some of the positions I heard from were centred on cardiology, gastroenterology, marginalized communities, mental health, dementia, neurology, global health, epidemiology and orthopaedics.

I currently work at St. Michael’s hospital and have been working here for about 3 years now. Although working in research is great, I’ve come to realize that a lot of people don’t exactly understand how to get a research position ESPECIALLY DURING UNDERGRAD because no one explains it in school. It took me a while to learn how to get a position and I had to ask so many people just to find out what to say and what to do in order to get a good position!

Medical school admissions are very competitive nowadays and if you live in Canada like I do, then you know how tough it is to get accepted. A high GPA and good extracurriculars are turning out to be subpar if you want to get in. I have a couple friends who had a 3.99 and a 4.0 who applied and didn't get a position while one fo my classmates got in with a 3.88 with extensive research on her CV.

Who am I? 🤷‍♂️
If you're new here, my name is Michael and I am a 3rd-year undergraduate student at the University of Waterloo here in Canada. I make YouTube videos about productivity, tech and other cool stuff. I hope you enjoy them 😁

Getting a research position is so important but it’s extremely time consuming so it’s definitely important to make sure you like the lab that you’re in!

Do you know how to get research in first /second year ? Is it just the same process here? I guess having the first research experience made it alot easier to get more, but getting the first one is tough
