Cuenca is definitely a different culture to the coastal areas. If the 70-75 degree weather is comfortable, the city offers so much diversity in things to do and see and experience. And housing costs are super affordable, health care is easy to access. There are quite a few wins that I am finding here in Cuenca.

I’ve lived on the coast, in the mountains, and in the Amazon. I like the mountains way more than the coast. Between the mountains and the Amazon it’s a hard decision. I’m currently splitting my time between my farm in the mountains and a new property near Tena in the Amazon. If you want to be in or near a city, Tena is really nice right now. I rented a 4bd apartment near the center for $235 per month with all utilities (including wifi) included. Food is comparable to sierra. The town is big enough to have nice restaurants, a big Tia, banks, and hospitals, but small enough to be totally walkable. My favorite thing is how close it is to many outdoor activities. My cost of living in rural sierra is slightly lower than in the city in Tena, but it’s very close and the weather and lifestyle are a little more accommodating.

Edit: there’s also a lot of fishing out here, both trips deeper into the jungle for some adventurous sport fishing, or even just lazily trying to catch a couple tilapia in the river in the city. There’s a small river right next to my apartment in the city that I have been using to teach my son how to fish because there’s a bunch of big tilapia in it. Nothing you’d want to eat, because it’s polluted, but good for practice.

We thought, being from Phoenix we would freeze in Cuenca. Nope. Its nice. Just have to wear socks... Ie had to go buy socks! We pay 1/2 what we paid in Manta with no ocean view. Manta 1 bed 1.5 baths. Cuenca 3 bed 2 baths WITH outdoor space. Taxis are a bit more here. But the bus system in Cuenca with the tranvia is unparalleled

Cotacachi has a great climate, is safe and muy tranquilo. But it is on the small side.

Hi Steve and Shon,
We plan to come back to this video as a family.
We just finished your video with tips for couples, and enjoyed it.
What's changed for you two in Salinas?
Have you started to tire on beach living, or did something uncomfortable happen since you returned from Alaska?
We hope you stay in Ecuador. I believe Steve mentioned taking me out for dinner.
Thanks for letting us know.

Looks like you are living somewhere around the Aquamira. I would think twice before getting a car, lots of problems come with owning one.

Hello LLA!👋🏽😊😎

If a pathway to essentials (medical clinics, shopping, etc.) is within reasonable distance, it's "safe, " and your monthly expenses will reduce, YES!

I traveled around the country when I visited last year. There are things that I like about the mountains and the coast. I'm NOT a fan of Quito. I'm thinking that I will start on the coast for at least six months and then explore other areas. People talk about Cuenca all the time. So far the only thing I've heard about it that interests me is the cost of living and the cooler weather. I think I need to break down and visit it when I come back.

They have not thought about living in Galapagos, they could live for a few months, which allows them the residence time to be here, I think it is six months.😅

I don't know if you are interested in doing fulltime travel meaning traveling around the world and staying up to three months in different countries. There is a married couple on YouTube who have been traveling fulltime for 7 years. The YouTube channel is Grounded Life Finances. You might be able to get some good tips from them. Good Luck and Be Safe on whatever you decided to do.

I have lived here 3 years now, I love Ecuador. After considering many things I decided on living in Cuenca. Zero regrets. I love the coast, but at the end Cuenca has more to offer. When I want the beach i rent an airbnb for a week and travel to Salinas. Salinas was my 2nd pick.

Stay on the coast as long as the crime rate and cost of living is better than the US. 😊
