What a great idea & a simple sollution in one unit.
I would finish it in anything that will show the natural grain of the wood as i don't think that you can beat it.

What a great design, Vikki! The only thing I might add, would be a couple of Velcro strips on the seat, so a cushion could be temporarily added when not using it as steps! Hours sitting on hard wood would make my botty sore!
