I love all the compacts shown here. I just bought a M52 compact and really want to go to events and start getting seat time with it, this motivates me to do that.

Some are cheap (that need literally everything), & some belong in the junkyard yet still carry a $15k asking price.

Well, there's a couple of wrong infos in there. Let me correct you.

- E36/46 make great drift cars because they are very light if you completly strip them.
- The E36/46 come with an Inline 6 Vanos engine if you buy a 320i or higher. M52s tend to have single Vanos, while all M54s have dual Vanos ( for those who don't know what vanos is, it's german vtec )
- They make good power stock and even more after a turbo kit because they have a lot of displacement( don't cheap out on cooling because you'll get heat issues if you drift with a turbo kit )
- Spare parts are somewhat widely available if you life in germany, don't know about the US tho
- There is a pretty big aftermarket for E36s/46s
- No, it doesn't have a stock lsd, at least not EU modles
- If you buy one, always look at the rear axle bracket, especially the spherical roller bearings. They tend to rust out rather quickly or the bearing pickups tend to tear the chassis. There are aftermarket solutions for that issue, but you'll need a welder or someone who can weld.
- You need to switch your ball joints and hydro bearings really often if you are drifting, because the OEM ones are shit. There are also aftermarket solutions for that.

My recomendations is:

Don't buy one for drifting if you don't want to spend a lot of money on parts to repair before you drift.
In germany they also keep getting more expensive even if they are in a really bad condition. So you'll have to repair a lot.
BUT
If you have the money and you're willing to spend time on repairs and drift set up, go for it.
The I6 sounds great and has a good powerband

both 36&46 have weak rear subframes😅 I doubt how durable they are even after reinforced them.
