EDIT: USA could (should) have let Ukraine know they they won't join in case of Russian invasion. This would have made Ukraine resort to diplomatic ways to make peace with Russia. Obviously, they won't have joined NATO, and that would have been good for everyone

NATO and US is the only reason that escalated this issue. Rather than opposing Putin they have to convince him, but they did the opposite and when Ukraine needed help their help was only within the papers and media.

Similar things happened in Afganistan last year, Afgani citizens were pleading for Help from west at that time. you can remember scenes from Kabul Airport for which west didn't do anything, similar things are happening in Ukraine, and similar things can happen with Taiwan too.
