What's A Cooking Show Without Any Food? | Planet Money | NPR

Grocery shopping the first few weeks of this crisis was insane (and frankly, it’s still pretty nuts now). Shelves were empty. People were trying to buy up tons of stuff because no one knew what was going to happen; so demand was way up, but supply was the same.

For the most part, supply and demand has evened out, but there may be a new reason for empty shelves in produce sections soon. The health of farmworkers is at risk. If there are more outbreaks on farms, there might not be enough healthy people to pick food.

Just imagine a world where viral cooking shows didn’t have any food to cook with. Actually, no need, we’ve imagined it for you in this, the fifth installment of the Quarantine Edition of Planet Money Shorts.

This was by-far my favorite Planet Money video. It’s very entertaining and approachable, but it’s also super informative!

I share this with my students all the time!

Nice, fun clear video but it’s forgetting one large, glaringly obvious fact that farmers are simply not paying enough for labour! A global problem which keeps the poor poor and even poorer workers searching for these kind of jobs. Indigenous workers simply cannot, and will not, live on subsistence wages and live “20 to a room”. There is one extremely simple answer to this.... pay more and local workers will come! 50 years ago, migrant workers usually came from the local population, not foreign labour pools. Globalisation has driven wages down and it simply must stop if we don’t want national and international unrest. The richest must consider giving up a little more and spread it downwards if we don’t want the “Amazon Dystopia” that now seems unavoidable.🤚 🙏

This video is excellent, both entertaining and educational. I'm becoming a BIG fan of Jack's videos and wish he did some more long form videos in addition to his NPR Tik Tok content.
