Dnipro dam hit as Russia launches strikes across Ukraine

Russia attacked Ukraine overnight with over 90 missiles and 60 drones.

The strikes targeted Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure, including the Dnipro dam in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine’s largest hydroelectric power plant.

The Ukrainian president called on the country’s allies to deliver air defence systems to protect against airborne attacks.

“Russian missiles have no delays, unlike aid packages for Ukraine. ‘Shahed’ drones have no indecision, unlike some politicians. It is critical to understand the cost of delays and postponed decisions.”

The Dnieper 2 Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) is "in critical condition" after its turbine room and electrical equipment were seriously damaged, Ukrhydroenergo Director Igor Sirota said.

According to him, the facility has suffered significant damage.

"We are losing the station. The HPP-2 is in danger. We don’t know at what capacity it will be able to operate. The HPP-2 is in critical condition. The HPP-1 has also stopped operations, so we are doing everything we can to raise the gates and process the water, " Ukraine’s Strana media outlet quoted him as saying.

Sirota specified that the supporting structure of the HPP-2 had been damaged and crane rails had been destroyed. "We will have to fully rebuild the turbine room and repair electrical equipment, " he added, noting that there was no threat of a dam break.

According to earlier reports, power supplies were suspended to several districts of the Kiev-controlled city of Zaporozhye following a series of explosions. The patrol police also reported that the road above the Dnieper HPP dam had been partially closed to traffic.

Ihor Syrota, the director of Ukrhydroenergo, reported extensive damage to the plant's turbine hall, rendering both stations of the Dnipro HPP inoperative. The incident is part of a broader series of attacks on Ukraine's energy system, described by the Ministry of Energy as the largest in recent times.

The national energy company Ukrenergo has announced emergency shutdowns in six regions, and the Ukrainian energy holding DTEK noted serious damage to thermal power plants across the country, leading to widespread power outages.
