REBUILDING MY MK2 ESCORT REAR AXLE! DIFF, HALFSHAFTS & BRAKES

Welcome back all,

In this weeks video I start to make some progress rebuilding my rear axle from my Mk2 Escort. This has been the longest project on the channel and at times I have neglected to dedicate time to the Escort. However after selling a few of my other vehicles, I am determined to dedicate more hours to my Mk2 Escort and get some real progress done.

The video includes me showcasing many parts which I had powder coated, along with plenty of new ones that have been purchased. I re-fit the differential, half shafts & rear braking set up but I still need to create the brake lines for the rear axle + fit the handbrake cables. There will be another video shorty where I complete these other tasks and fit the axle with some new leaf springs (that I'm yet to purchase).

Thank you for watching, be sure to subscribe to the channel to follow my Mk2 Escort project!

I would be going for the 2” decambered single leaf springs from RetroFord. No need for silly lowering blocks.

My first car was a Mk11. 1992, I was 17 and behind the wheel of a short wheelbase, rear wheel drive, skinny tyred non ABS, non powersteering mental mobile! 😁 I learned roadcraft very, very quickly driving it. No accidents in the year I had it before breaking my hand playing football (not a goalie, our P.E. teacher was a sadist who always inflated the balls to about 100 psi. Everybody was afraid to head it, me included, so, ducking out the way of a crossfield pass, it struck my left hand and broke the middle bone with an oblique fracture! ) so sold it to another first time driver. He was afraid to test drive it, so I drove it one handed around the block. Clutch was on it's last legs but he seemed fine about it. Happy days indeed.

I would also recommend decambered single leaf springs, don't need the lowering blocks then

That rachet strap idea is fantastic. I've smacked my wing and chipped it before trying to force a spring on awkwardly. What a great tip!

Years since I last rebuilt drum brakes, In fact it would’ve been on my first car, Mk2 Fiesta C714 KHE.
I miss the car but I definitely don’t miss drum brakes! 😅

I had a 3.89 diff in my MK2 escort. Was a slightly overbored 2.0 pinto with fast road cam and Kawasaki ninja bike carbs mated to type 9 5 speed. Acceleration was fantastic but was screaming at 70mph. Just worth noting if you’re planning regular long journeys.

If you buy new leaf springs, would recommend decambered ones from Motorsport tools or Retroford as they are uprated in poundage as well. Will be a 1.5 to 2 inch drop and you can always fit 1/2 inch or 1 inch lowering blocks if you want to go lower than a politicians soul 😂

There's a really great Snap-on tool that does the Shoe Springs/Clip. It's £80 admittedly.... but it does make the job much easier. It has a little magnet in it too.
