I had a buddy who used to go surf fishing one time I went with him he had a can of pennies in his truck and threw handfuls out the window as we drove down the beach. I asked him what he was doing and he said it kept the metal detector guys busy down this end so they didn't get in our way. Lol

I do this for a hobby too, and there have been times when finding pennies were actually ruining my hunt by taking up the majority of my time, so in that case i adjust the setting to not react to them. Of course when I'm finished I start wondering if I might have lost out on a rare, valuable penny that I may have otherwise found. 🤔

Next time use your net/scooper especially on the beach because many junkies lay on the beach at night using the moonlight to help see when they are cooking BigH and then toss the needle
