Seeing movies and cartoon have piranha feeding frenzies is always fun, but to see this in real life and know now that those media weren’t exaggerating is astonishing. Watching it is amazing.

My friend, who kayaks for sport, sometimes in different countries, once told me that he had to paddle through piranha-infested waters, and was instructed to curl up in a defensive position face down if he capsized. What a terrifying thought…

The sound effect(s) engineers, the ones who work on creating an impression of what piranhas nibbling on things sounds like, must have a lot of fun. 🐟

When I was 11 I actually swam with piranhas in South America. Also caught them. Over the years I had 4 different aquariums with a school of them, the largest being a 120 gallon, with some real beauties. Few things fight together, and as completely, as these stunning marvels of nature. The Red Bellies are incomparable. It's incredible to think that people have flushed these or thrown them into rivers or streams. You don't really want to feed them goldfish, for a variety of reasons, the least of which is not what they do to goldfish. It's likely that every picture you've seen of their teeth has been accurate enough. They look like sharks teeth but mesh like scissors.

The thumbnail photo is of a Golden Dorado (Salminus Maxillosus), NOT a piranha. Strange choice of thumbnail....and yes, I have watched the vid & know the story starts with Dorado & ends with piranha

It’s fascinating how piranhas can go on a feeding frenzy (with speed and many competitors, all with jaws capable of crushing whatever fits between those jaws)…and strip a creature to the bone in a matter of minutes…but not the bone itself.

I've swum with the piranha more times than I can count. I've swum in the Amazon Basin near Manaus at least 40x to 60x. The fresh water dolphins always bite me but the piranha only end up on my dinner plate.
