I was on a construction job when the walls of the trench collapsed, and the contractor wasn't using the safety shield because it took too long to move it every time, the guy in the pit got squeezed like toothpaste tube as the ground came in around him. It was a horrible thing to see.

Please be careful with that trench. It is not secured and can kill you if it collapses, with or without your head above ground. It will squish you to death. I am not an expert but have seen enough stories about these kinds of situations to know that you should not do that.
