Today, May 25, 2022, is Paul Weller's 64th birthday.

Paul John Weller (born John William Weller; 25 May 1958) is an English singer-songwriter and musician. Weller achieved fame with the punk rock/new wave/mod revival band The Jam (1972–1982). He had further success with the blue-eyed soul music of the Style Council (1983–1989), before establishing himself as a solo artist with his eponymous 1992 album.

Despite widespread critical recognition as a singer, lyricist, and guitarist, Weller has remained a national, rather than international, star and much of his songwriting is rooted in English society. Many of his songs with the Jam had lyrics about working class life. He was the principal figure of the 1970s and 1980s mod revival, often referred to as "The Modfather", and an influence on Britpop bands such as Oasis.

The Jam were an English mod revival/punk rock band during the 1970s and early 1980s, which formed in 1972 at Sheerwater Secondary School in Woking, in the county of Surrey. The band released 18 consecutive Top 40 singles in the United Kingdom, from their debut in 1977 to their break-up in December 1982, including four number one hits.

"Going Underground" is the first single to reach the no #1 chart position by The Jam, released in March 1980. It debuted at #1 in the UK Singles Chart, spending three weeks at the top. It was the first of three instant chart-toppers for the group.

And the public get what the public wants and a track that went straight in at No.1 in the UK. Every element of the track is a hook, a slogan, a moment-coming over like a 3 minute manifesto.
'Going Underground' intended to be an event - the market made sure it felt like one.

As interesting to watch was the audience member (0:26) who appeared to be in a trance as she allowed the music to take her to another dimension.

The most energy I've seen Weller attempting to lip-sync "Going Underground" on a music TV show (so far that I've seen).

Not even looking at the band whilst they're playing. What a waste.
Timeless song.
