2022 Hyundai Tucson Review: Big on Value, But With a Powertrain Problem

We tested a 2022 Hyundai Tucson Limited as part of a six-vehicle compact SUV comparison test that also included the refreshed 2023 Ford Escape, the redesigned 2023 Honda CR-V, the redesigned 2023 Kia Sportage, the all-new 2023 Mazda CX-50 and the 2023 Nissan Rogue.

The six SUVs were put through a battery of tests: The judges drove each of them on the same evaluation loop, took them on a 300-plus-mile route to determine real-world road trip fuel economy, measured each one’s cargo area, checked car-seat fitment, assessed safety and driver-assist features, and rated their value for the money.

Hyundai is known for delivering a lot of car — and features — for the money, and the Tucson shows why the brand has this reputation; it offers distinctive design, impressive tech features and lots of safety equipment. Judges also praised the Tucson’s roomy interior.

Not everything was great about the cabin, though; both the push-button gear selector and touch-sensitive dashboard controls were dinged by our judges. The Tucson’s powertrain also struggled in our testing; acceleration wasn’t great, and the Tucson was the least efficient on our fuel economy drive, with observed gas mileage of 25.4 mpg.

With the hybrid, it's best in class along with it's kia cousin. Without the hybrid, I wouldn't consider buying it.

Why would anyone buy the gas engine if a better hybrid is available. You chose the wrong powertrain on a bunch of these
