In English, nouns are often accompanied by the word “the”. In Dutch, there are two words for “the”: “De” and “Het”. Most nouns are "de" nouns, but a few use “het”. The reasons why each word is “de” or “het” are somewhat arbitrary, so it’s best to use a list to memorize them.

Do I hear it right that the speaker do not differ "long" and "short" vowels by length, only the sound characteristics are different.
Like "a" is /ɑ/ and "aa" is /a/, not /aː/

This is the way Dutch people speak. AN (Algemeen Nederlands - General Dutch) or ABN (Algemeen Beschaaft Nederlands - General Civilized Dutch) is the standard. In Flanders the dialect is different and closer to AN/ABN than Dutch (Hollands). Foreigners learning the language are encouraged to watch the Belgian news instead of the Dutch. I've seen the books and the level of skill you have to have to take a "Staatsexamen" (State Exam) and finish it successfully. It's quite a trial. The material is at college level.
I was surprised how easily Dutch people switch to English when confronted with the language. So there's no trouble if you don't speak Dutch. In contrast, there are three official languages in Belgium; Dutch (50%), French (49%) and German (1%). As far as I know people in Flanders also speak english. That might not be the case in the southern part of Belgium where people speak only French.
