HOW to get BETTER SUPPORT 💨🪈 #flute

HOW do I get BETTER AIR SUPPORT?
This is one of my most frequently asked questions from flutists!
By the way, that jab at YouTube viewers was all in good fun. You can call yourself whatever you want! I refer to myself as a flutist, and so do most other professionals I know, but if you don’t, that doesn’t mean you aren’t qualified to play this beautiful instrument!
But I digress…
Air support seems to be the magic words students consider when wanting to level up their flute sound and projection. In some ways, it is a “top down” idea, instead of a “bottom up.” When you think about “support” to produce a clear sound, you might have the temptation to squeeze or restrict. But if you RELAX like you do when you are SIGHING, the sound is so much better and more clear and open. We talk about OPENING a lot, just like singers do. All wind players consider this as part of their tone studies. It is just a natural law. It is very hard to be OPEN when you are considering CONSTRICTING a part of your body. Yes, your diaphragm should be engaged, and that is important, but over fixating on that can limit results.
