Definitely true, however for those of North African descent, specifically Libyan/Tunisian the dialect is even more similar

It's very close to Tunisian arabic dialect, I use to watch Maltese TV from Tunisian peninsula Cap Bon using an analog TV antenna when wind is blowing toward west😂😂 and I can understand most of what they talking about.

Maltese national here with Lebanese descending surname (MICALLEF) Proud of our heritage, those who deny our Arab ancestry are just nuts.

French-Moroccan here, I do not speak Darija but I quite understand and speak/write a bit of Arabic .
The first time I heard this language I freezed : as a mixed guy, this country/language seems to have, like me, roots from two different worlds. And because Latin alphabet is my base, learning Maltese is a gate for mastering Arabic, a transition. I speak a bit of Italian so, for me Maltese is a mix all what I like. It was really disturbing at first, I never felt that.

But since, even if I don't gave time yet, I want to learn Maltese. I deeply feel connected to

Marhaba. MARK YOU NEED TO MAKE FUSHA COURSES AS WELL, NOT ONLY LEBANESE ONE. I WOULD LEARN IT WITH PLEASURE. YOUR PRONUNCIATION OF Standard ARABIC IS VERY BEAUTIFUL. PLEASE LIKE THIS COMMENT IF YOU GUYS AGREE. ❤️ Looking forward to your Fusha lessons In sha Allah...

Maltese is quite literally descended from Maghrebi Arabic. The only reason it's mostly unrecognizable is the fact that it got the English treatment with most of its vocab getting replaced by romance language loanwords

Maltese is straight up just an Arabic dialect basically
