Maltese actually evolved from Arabic as it was ruled by Arabs for couple of centuries, then picked up other words from European languages, mainly Italian English.
Maltese is the only semitic language written in the Roman Alphabets.

- Girl: Tifla
- Daughter: Bint
- My daughter: Binti or Tifla tiegħi
- Boy: Tifel
- Son: Iben
- My Son: Ibni or Tifel tiegħi

- Dog: Kelb
- Love: Imħabba
- I love you: Inħobbok
- Hurry Up: Għaġġel
- Come On: Ejja
- Walk: Imxi
- How are you (Singular): Kif inti
- How are you (Plural): Kif inthom

- The roof of the house/home: Bejt

Bint exists in Maltese too.. It means daughter. So binti means my daughter. Whereas tifla means girl. If i say it-tifla tieghi, it means my girl which is understood to mean my daughter.

Tfla is also used for a little girl in Arabic.

Hey Amber every word you meantioned are Arabic including the word "teflah" which means "female child". The word that your friend used "bint" means young girl. Also
"aya, aya" for hurry up thats also Arabic. It's "Hiya" هيا. Its a classic and standard Arabic and still used by some Arabs main in conjunction with "bina" si "Hiya Bina" meaning lets go. It's actually way more correct that the word your friend used "yalla"

The discussion is about the origin of the  Maltese language and not the dialect .


In Tunisia, Arabic is spoken   with some Tunisian words and other north African darija words  from Algeria and Libya and Morocco 


Some Maltese words are  derived from Italian, french, Spanish, Turkish and Berber words . 


 Every North African country has its own dialect and pronunciation of the standard Arabic language.


Algerians   and Tunisians also speak french


Libyans speak Italian


Moroccans speak french and Spanish

There are words and a great similarity between the Maltese language and the Tunisian dialect, and the Tunisian dialect differs from the Arabic of the East.

A lot of the "old" words are all Arabic based. Even the word for airport is the same Matar. Even though the maltese rarely that word. They just say airport (with an Italian twist 😂)
