Top 10 Best Super Mario Levels of All Time

After 36 years, there have been a lot of Mario games, with hundreds of levels between them and most of them are pretty great. So we decided it was time to comb through the treasure trove of stages and poll our entire staff to find out which levels have stood the test of time better than all the rest.

Please note, while certain members of the staff championed to include wonderful levels from games like Paper Mario, and even Super Mario World 2 (which is undoubtedly part of the Yoshi series), we opted to stick with games from the main series So expect to see levels from Super Mario 64, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Sunshine, and even Super Mario Bros. for NES!

The Bob-omb Battlefield in Super Mario 64 is the most memorable stage for me.

Jolly Roger Bay is one of my all time favorites. The soothing music and cool blue tones made it really feel like an area you could explore. Then diving down and swimming around in 3D to discover the sunken ship and the eel down there was such an awesome experience

Gusty Garden Galaxy should've been your SMG pick, it's a gorgeous level.

3D World had some AMAZING level design. Sad that none of them made the list. This list is solid either way tho.

Super Mario galaxy 1 & 2 are the best Mario games for me. Everything in those games are so memorable and nostalgic. Also the music makes me feel things that no other game could ever make me feel.

Either 'SM64: Bob-omb Battlefield' or 'SM64: Whomp's Fortress' should be on this list

Its so nostalgic to see how much the Mario games have progressed, from playing the 3 pixel Mario game on a Nintendo DS, to playing Mario 64 on a Nintendo 64, to then playing Super Mario Odyssey on a Nintendo Switch, then going back to play Mario 64 as a speedrun with a PC in 2021-2023

That level from Super Mario 3 where you crouch on the white block to get behind the scenery to find the warp whistle

Some levels that come to mind for me are:

Super Mario Bros 3 (World 1-3) Where you fall through background and get the 1st whistle

Super Mario Bros 3 (World 5 Spiral Tower)
That feeling of getting higher and higher not knowing there’s a sky section of the world

Mario 64 (Bob-omb Battlefield)
First real level 3-D experience

Mario 64 (Cool Cool Mountain)
That slide, the winter environment!

My list would've had more levels from Mario 64. Especially Bob-Omb Battlefield.

Don't care what people say about Odyssey, it's the greatest video game ever made. The level design is sublime! Had a smile on my face the whole time playing honestly. A work of pure art, decades of trial and error crystallised into one perfect experience imo. ❤

The haunted mansion in Mario 64 will always be my favorite. It’s the only horror themed Mario level we ever got.

That cape in Mario world always felt to me like he was gliding, not flying. Mario 3 raccoon suit, on the other hand, he was definitely flying 😂

Gateway Galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy for me. Flying as Mario was so unique. I’m genuinely sad they never used that idea in another game.
