You know, Splatoon is actually quite a dark series. Evidence:
- Humanity fails to learn and is eliminated by rising sea levels.
- The last remenant of humanities knowledge goes crazy upon learning that the next most intelligent life aren't what it assumed they would be.
- An entire species is forced to essentially be inslaved by their leader because they don't have enough power to power their homes.
- An AI remenant of humanity caused mass genocide using blenders in order to gain the DNA neccessary to create what it believed to be the ultimate lifeforms.

For those who are curious of what it means to be sanitized:

Many test subjects were unable to complete the tests. However, those who were and managed for find the four thangs were caught in TarTar's trap and ground up into their ink. They would then be taken to the 3rd phase(or 4th.. idk) room where they would be reformed with their best traits via a massive spawn pad(?). This process would seemingly remove all memories from the Octarians, however, it is believed music can be remembered, as stated in Dedf1sh's bio. This could be due to exposure to Calamari Inkantation...

Anyways, when sanitized, their bodies are composed of "Supreme DNA", which essentially takes over their mind and body, making them walking zombies with "No Pulse".
Over-Exposure to normal Ink may deteriorate the Supereme DNA, as we seen both Agent 3 infected with it and returned to normal via exposure to ink, and TarTar literally DIE from normal ink.

So they're sanitized... And fittingly the ink looks a lot like hand soap. So they're probably just regular Octolings dunked in the weird ooze thst TarTar makes out of... Ground up test subjects. Huh.
