Leaves are also good because you can see through them, any single block soaks most explosion damage, waterlogged leaves cannot be blown up but still break instantly, they drop food (sometimes), can be used as emergency fuel, drop sticks to save on wood, drop saplings to make more of themselves, won't spawn mobs on top of themselves, don't block light so mobs won't spawn under them, block the sun from burning mobs somehow so you can save your pet skeleton.

You can also put leaves in composters for bone meal, so yeah they are VERY useful

The one great thing about birch is it can be darkened by being turned into sticks or tools, otherwise I share the resentment towards it. Birch used to give you the same wood as oak and spruce before beta 1.3.
