*Other uses for dirt I could think of:*

Mud, clay, trading clay for emeralds, cheap building material, block mobs can spawn on, useful variations like grass, able to house plants, tree farms, food, housing material.

You can also make a clay farm with dirt and the clay can be turned into terracotta, this is very usefull when you are playing on a server with limited worldborder and no terracotta biomes

Dirt reason: good for secret bases and can trade your way up to an emerald
