This is basically an overdramatic version of a man with extreme arachnophobia trying to kill a spider in his basement. There's no way I can take a tarantula smart enough to toy with a man and stare him down seriously. And yet this still scares the shit out of me every time.

Amazing how someone made a horror movie based around something you can kill by stepping on it.

AND it's genuinely terrifying.

When I was ten, my dad and I watched this movie. Afterward, while I was in the shower, he threw a toy black spider over the shower curtain. I'm sure they heard me in the next town.

The male general spider was badass. He was like the Jason Voorhees of spiders.lol

1:15 or 1:21 The close-up of the spider's eyes gives you the chills like it's staring into your soul.

I like how the spider seems to have a personal vendetta against him, even though in real life it wouldn't have the capacity to even behave that way

The thing that really stands out for me is the shrieking sound the spider makes. I highly doubt any spider let alone one the big ones make shrieks like that. But hey, that what makes the spider in the movie even more menacing.

I wonder did Harry ever tell Lloyd about the time a spider brought him to tears.

This movie intensified my arachnophobia as a child. Mainly because they used real huntsman spiders. The very same that were also in my house in Australia. Perfect combo.

who remembers "eight legged freaks?" you would think the concept of giant mutant spiders could top this on the terror scale but this movie takes the crown. hands down.

This used to scare me as a kid. To this day, it still scared the shit out of me.
Especially the close up of the spider .

This is when 7 y/o me was yanked out of the theater by my mom; my face was stricken with the tears of hysteria.  I miss the good old days.

The music score is absolutely perfect... the choral note when the spider creeps along Jennings's leg... the piano when the spider is thrashing about on fire

If you don't specifically have arachnophobia, this movie is *hilarious*.

Arachnophobia did an awesome job creating a climax between man and spider.

0:54 General Spider:(thinking) So, you thought you could defeat the most powerful arachnid in the world? Without your friends, you’re hopeless!

Jeff Daniels sure takes a lot of punishment in movies, whether it's getting blown up in Speed, eating gum that transforms you into an alien in My Favorite Martian, having massive diarrhea after drinking tea spiked with laxative, getting his tongue stuck to a ski lift chair, and getting his burger spat on, and accidentally lighting his leg on fire in Dumb and Dumber, or getting attacked by a giant killer spider in the cellar. He deserves an Oscar just for having to share a scene with that creeper.
