This talk was part of the Workshop “Mathematical Aspects of Geophysical Flows” held January 20 - 24, 2020 at the ESI.

The workshop will focus on mathematical studies of geophysical flows and will cover topics in oceanography and in atmospheric sciences, placing emphasis on the interpretation of geophysical coherent structures in geometric dynamical systems terms and on qualitative studies.
