Canon bans third parties from making RF lenses - does it really matter?

Recently Canon announced it will no longer allow third parties to manufacture lenses for their RF mount, but does it really matter. In this short video I explain why I do not think it does and you should not be deterred from buying a Canon mirrorless camera.

Keep in mind every so often Canon runs a clearance sale on refurb product as well, as they did in late 2022. Purchased several F4 L zooms and an RP for about 40% off, and some non L lenses for well over 50% off new prices ( in the US at least).

Unfortunate that Canon bans 3rd party AF RF glass, but in the end it's a business, and they exist to make a profit. And the compact size of the RF24-105F4 and RF70-200F4 L zooms, at least when packed in a bag, makes this system a viable option vs my m43 pro gear, depending on the situation.

I am sure that if you have a Canon APS-C camera you could buy an adaptor and put any lens ever made on it.
But that is not the point.
A person buying into a new system for the first time looks at native galss.

Does it mean that Sigma or Tamron will produce new, better lenses with EF mount ? No ! Does it mean that Sigma or Tamron will produce new better lenses with RF mount ? No ! They will produce it for Z mount or E mount. Time is going and we cannot live just with hope for ten years or more.

Bought a Canon body before realizing this! Not a total cheapskate as I own Leica too but RF lenses are grossly overpriced. I dont need a $10k camera bag.

Not sure if it is really that different than others. For example even though M43 is a standard, the full feature set of a Panasonic lens only works on a Panasonic body.

Companies loose money on the body and make their profits on the lens. Very similar to the ink jet printer business.

Seems a bad move by Canon. My first digital SLR was a canon. Not happy so I changed to Panasonic M4/3. Brilliant, have several cameras and wouldn't part with any of them.
