In a 1995 game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings, Steelers head coach Bill Cowher was so upset with referee Gordon McCarter for a penalty called on a Fuad Reveiz field goal, that it led to what might be the greatest coaching meltdown and coaching outburst of all-time. This is the story and footage of the time that Bill Cowher completely lost his cool

I had never heard about this moment until I made a highlight from this game for my channel. Truly amazing that not only did Cowher not get ejected, but that the refs ended up being suspended. Seems like if that happened today, the NFL would just issue a statement the following week saying "whoops our bad we'll try and do better next time".

For anyone who wants to see more, I have the 10-minute highlight of this game on my channel.

I also have the whole meltdown sequence as it was broadcast here:

I think he kept his cool in this instance. You've clearly never seen a true Cowher eruption.

Bill Cowher's outburst after Sir Purr, the Panthers mascot, accidentally jumped on a live ball is a pretty good one with a funny ending

He wasn’t flagged or ejected for giving the ref the picture simply because that ref knew damn well he was done.

Remember this like it was yesterday and I'm glad Cowher reacted like that and I don't care if he apologized or not and told his daughters he was wrong for PR reasons. The refs are paid to be professional too and do their jobs properly and not give free points to certain teams. I know the refs can't go back on their decisions but they do deserve and ear full when they royally screw up.

That was straight horseshit! The officials could've used some integrity and it would've changed the whole situation.

Refs have WAY TOO MUCH control over games even to this day. Literally to today. Oct 11, 2020.... refs took away 2TDs from the giants and gave the game to the cowgirls. There is never punishment for them blowing calls or just flat helping teams. This video being the exception to that. I've never seen rers fined and didn't even know this happened until I saw this video. I'm a steelers fan too. Dunno how I didn't know about this. Players get fined all the time for stuff. And at my job if I "completely miss something" or fuck up anywhere near as bad as refs do, I'd be in trouble if not just fired.... Refs need penalized and fined every time they make a wrong Maybe then they'll start getting their shit

I totally miss Bill on the sidelines. Yeah, he had a temper, but he was also hilarious. Shoving that photo in the refs pocket was priceless 😆.

I always thought this was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen! I saw live on TV. Cowher was sooo pissed, I thought he was going to have a stroke. You can see the veins on his neck pop out when he's having his conniption fit!

One of the things I remember about this moment, that wasn't mentioned was when the announcers were talking about the team discipline from Cowher. It's kind of an important part to what happened as well. When the call came the players went and lined up on the sideline. All 11 of them. Cowher counted there were 11. He trusted his players and had the photo sent down, because he knew if 11 lined up that means there were only 11 out there.

I can never forgive an official that "stands by their call" when there's clear proof it's a bad call. Like are you stupid, stubborn or both. Any referee that would do that has to lose their job
