Naomi Klein, professor of Climate Justice at the University of British Columbia, joins to discuss her recent book Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World.

Naomi Klein then jumps right into her metaphor of “doppelgangers” in politics, and the mirroring and corruption of various political movements in the age of the internet. Expanding on this, Klein dives into the role of COVID as a major accelerant in this corruption, looking to the sudden unified radicalization of the wellness left and the ultra-religious right, and how it played into an increasing trend of rapidly dropping faith in US political institutions and their systems of accountability, with right-wing conspiracy offering a (pseudo) solution as the center and left continuously failed to provide theirs.

Fantastic segment. My mom is one of those who defers to the "lizard people" explanation, which is frustrating, as it's impossible to have a real productive discussion at that point. It always strikes me as a cop-out.

The last few points Naomi made was really fucking good. The bannon coalition/philosophy feeds off the the silence in traditional progressive politics and then promotes their actual far right agenda. It's cult dynamics, it's bait and switch. Someone like Sean Fein, president of the uaw auto workers union, who is left and addressing ground level issues for real life gains is bannons worst nightmare because he takes away bannons bait and follows it through to positive real life change that everyone can see and understand and cannot make conspiracy stories about.

I have been wondering (like many others in our position on the left) about this stuff for some years now - even though I am in Australia the effect Naomie talks about has been seen in my own family ie it is not limited to the situation in the US - but maybe it is most pernicious there.

I notice changes in human behavior in 2014. I live in Dallas. Young white males would drive drive a Honda Civi, Subaru something simple. Skinny, clean shaven. There were 3 white guys in my gym that I am sure didn’t know one another. Were now getting jacked, growing beards and driving these large very loud pick up trucks. I saw and noticed their transformation. I also noticed this all over town. All of a sudden there were these large, loud trucks all around me. Men with beards looking mean and jacked. I remeber talking about this with my wife. That was 2014. Then I started noticing it in politicians. Ted Cruz went from clean shaving wasn't in shape but wasnt was big as he is now wearing a large beard. Don Jr the same. Went from clean shaven to this beard. Its like something these guys ate or drank altered or changed their make up. Even Don Jr current fiance who is far right use to be married to California Governor Gavin Newsome. This is a very interesting thing going on, and I just want to understand how this can happened on a scale this large.

I’ve heard something said before, that I think makes a lot of sense in light of this conversation. We shouldn’t blindly agree with people about problems, because too often groups who want to make problems worse will use language and rhetoric designed to hide their real motives. If “both sides” are going to agree it should be on outcomes or results. We should be asking not weather people agree or not in problems…but do they agree on what the solution should be and end result look like?

The shift from alternative medicine (based on physical therapy like exercise to psychological like meditation) to white supremacy is linked to HOW those alternative medicines gain prominence in US society; through gentrification. It serves as a vehicle for these markets/business to exsist and reinforce social heirarchies through space and labor. The business sees itself as outsiders/marginalized as the communities they reside among, yet a commercial vanguard for making the community less "ghetto" and perceived as "bringing in" more business (when in reality they, as a business model, are dependent on siphoning funds from the community and causing displacement). Again, these same anti-vaxers see commerce as THE principle means of asserting citizenship (getting cancelled is akin to being arrested, wokeness is preventing them from earning a living the way they want to, facing "discrimination" for not being vaxed, etc)
