In order to tell if 21 is a prime or composite number we can use the following guidelines:

Prime Numbers are:
* Positive integers.
* Greater than 1.
* Divisible by ONLY two factors, 1 and itself.

Composite Numbers are:
* Positive integers.
* Greater than 1.
* Divisible by MORE THAN two factors, 1 and itself.

When we look at 21, it is a positive integer, greater than one, and there are MORE THAN two factors. Therefore 21 is a NOT prime number.

Alternative Method
You can also use the following method to check if 21 is prime or composite:
Check if the number is divisible by any odd number less than its square root. To do this, start by dividing the number by 3, then by 5, then by 7, and so on, until you reach the square root of the number. If any of these divisions result in an integer, then the number is composite. If none of them do, then the number is prime.
