Aldi is a German company that was split between two feuding brothers creating Aldi Sud and Aldi Nord. One brother building stores in northern Germany and the other building in southern Germany. When they expanded to the United States Aldi Sud is known as Aldi, and Aldi Nord is known as Trader Joe’s.

Becky! Aldi is my favorite store - it is small, less expensive and they have a great organic line of products. Love how they save you money by using their own branding and letting you bag your own groceries. Been shopping there for years.

It was fun to compare the Aldi in the USA with our Dutch stores.
You pronounce the "oo" in "stroopwafels" as the "o" in "oh".
There is not a single store in the Netherlands where they bag your groceries.
You take your own shopping bags with you, and pack it yourself.
More and more shops use a self scan option. You can scan it like you are the cashier in the store. It you use a handheld device, scan the product while you're walking through the store and you put the item directly in your shopping bag.
At the end, you scan a code at the checkout, put the scanner in a holder and you can pay with a (credit) card.
It works like a charm! And no waiting at the checkout.
