Some people tend to forget how many times Toothless has been captured and nearly died. The Hidden World is a safe place for him and the other dragons.

You can see everytime Toothless is about to fly off he doesn't think about his own safety first, he wonders, "What if someone captures Hiccup.." then later thinks, "What about my kids, and my Light fury.." and after everything possible, he thinks.. "What if I get in danger.." he ALWAYS put others life's before his and it's heartwarming.❤

It's crazy how much Toothless's design changed from the first movie to the third movie. I like to say that he changed mainly from being tamed, but I know that was just design development.
