How To Paint Rims FAST and CHEAP! (Best Method)

This video is a full tutorial on how to paint rims. Whether you want to change the look of your car or repair damaged rims like the ones in this video, painting your rims can solve the problem. Today we look into how its done.

Materials Needed:
- Jack
- Jack stands
- Lug wrench
- Soap and water
- 220 and 400 grit sandpaper
- Hair dryer or leaf blower
- Microfiber cloth and rubbing alcohol
- 2" painters tape
- Deck of cards you do not need
-Trash bags or plywood
- DupliColor filler primer
- Automotive primer
- Automotive rim paint (from paint shop)
- Automotive clear coat

Steps:
- Remove wheels from car with jack, stands, and lug wrench
- Wash each rim thoroughly with soap and water and let dry
- Sand each rim with 220 grit sandpaper, then 400 grit
- Blow away debris with leaf blower or hair dryer
- Wipe down with microfiber and rubbing alcohol
- Place rims on top of trash bags or plywood in painting location
- Place cards around edges to protect tire from paint
- Place painters tape over valve stems to protect from paint
- Apply one coat of filler primer to face of rims, 1 hr dry
- Apply two coats of automotive primer to face and barrel, 1 hr dry
- Apply two coats of automotive paint to face and barrel, `1-2 hr dry
- Apply two to three thick coats of clear coat, 5 hour dry between, 1 day dry after final coat

From someone that does this for a living. A few mistakes you made. Use a cleaner with your scuff pad. And sand paper. I’ll wet sand with a degreaser or spray away glass. Cleaner. When cleaning the rim never touch the rubber with the towel. Do a final wipe with the cards in. Primer is unnecessary on rims a very very coat might be fine but it tends to cause issues on the rims. You don’t want the thickest layer possible as thick clear coat will will be more brittle. Typically two coats. All of that is just minor professional differences.

Suggestion……save your back dude!!!! Have an elevated surface to work on & maybe build a “Lazy Susan” type rotating round surface so you can stand in one spot and gently rotate the wheel. Your spray can will stay more even & you’re less likely to miss areas while walking (bent over) around the tires.

Looks good. Just got a smoking deal on a Car for my sons "First Car". Only thing is it was old lady driven (Barely Driven At All) and she has Bland Alloy Rims, No Window Tint. Just kind of a boring looking Honda Accord. Paint looks good everything about this car is mint, so I'm going to put a little "Pizzazz" on it before I give it to him. Get it tinted, paint the rims up and and a complete stereo overhaul, sub setup. These are some great tips, reasonable price with a little work. Appreciate the video, I'm going to try it out. I'm doing this now with my 2010 mini copper. The previous owner had some major gouge marks that i wanted to repair. I used body filler and sanded it down to smooth it out prior to priming.

As a painter I would use shrink wrap, cut around rim and then tape off the over spray will draft over the rim

You can cut the tip of a finger from a rubber glove to cover the valve stem. Works pretty good. One glove does 4 wheels.
