A) Cats are popular household pets, and many homes around the world are host to these furry buddies. Even so, a surprising number of pet parents aren’t fully aware of how to care for them properly. In fact, there are a number of common blunders that many cat owners make, particularly those new to the job.
10 Common Mistakes Cat Owners Make
1. Expecting Your Kitten to Sleep at Night
C) Cats are nocturnal hunters by nature, so they are most active at night. For a peaceful night’s sleep, you should play hard with them before bedtime, feed them, and then ignore their nighttime capers. If you respond to their pounces at nighttime, then their play will continue!
2. Staring at Your New Cat
D) Staring is a sign of hostility in cat language, and it’s the same as claiming a piece of territory and preparing for a conflict. Instead, face front and just watch it from the corner of your eye so it feels more comfortable.
3. Giving Milk to Your Cat
E) Kittens need to drink their mothers’ milk, but if they can’t get it, it can be replaced with certain milk alternatives purchased at the vet, goat’s milk, or light cream (10%). When older, several changes occur to the cat’s body, and it actually produces less of the enzyme required for proper milk assimilation. So, adult cats might become lactose intolerant.
4. Not Understanding Their Natural Behaviors
F) From climbing curtains to scratching carpets, cats have a lot of natural behaviors that need an outlet. It is unrealistic to bring a cat into your home and expect it to behave perfectly and respect your stuff and furniture. Just be sure to provide an outlet for those behaviors, so the cat can practice climbing and shredding without damaging your priceless possessions.
5. Putting the Litter Tray in the Laundry Room
G) If your cat is on its tray when the washing machine spins, it could experience a terrible fright. If your furry baby associates the bad experience with toileting in the tray, it may choose a different, safer spot elsewhere in the house – possibly your bedroom. So, it’s better to put the tray in a quiet, cozy corner where it won’t be disturbed when doing its business.
6. Doing Hand Play
H) Lots of new kitten parents get caught up in using their hands for toys, letting the kitten chew on their fingers, etc. Just try to find a suitable replacement, such as a cat toy or a laser pointer, because hand-chasing behavior is not good when your cat weighs 10 pounds.
7. Allowing Your New Cat to Roam the Whole House
I) As a pet parent, you may bring your new cat home and give it the run of the house. This is a bad mistake because a cat that has only recently left familiar surroundings might find such a large space to be overwhelming. This could lead to them going to the ground and hiding for many days or toileting where they shouldn’t, which is a tough habit to break.
8. Deciding Against Pet Insurance
J) Your cat may develop an allergy, fall from a balcony, or eat a needle and thread. These days veterinary treatment is perfect, but it is somehow expensive. Pet insurance will give you peace of mind so that you can make treatment choices based on your cat’s best interests instead of your finances.
9. Water-Spraying to Break a Bad Habit
K) Your cat jumps on the counter, and you spray it with water. It works like magic, and it instantly jumps straight down. Then, you feel pleased with yourself and assume that the problem is solved. Well, this is a bad mistake because the cat associates the bad experience with you instead of what it was doing.
10. Not Grooming Your Cat from Day One
L) Don’t forget to groom out your lovely fluff pet from the first day if it has a knot. If your cat isn’t used to being brushed, it turns into a scary hissing spitting beast. Daily grooming not only gets your cat used to the experience but also prevents knots from forming in the first place.
