I live in the sunshine coast in australia. I am an aged care and disability support worker and i watch so many of my oldies rage about plastic bags because of the inconvience and lets face it they HATE change. That being said myself and many others have purchased a few reusable canvas bags and take them everytime. It is so defeating. They still sell thicker plastic bags in most shops and you pay 15cents now. Everyone just buys more plastic and it says theyre recycled bags but theyre not degradable. Australians are arrogant at the best of times and love to give me shit about being a greeny all the time 😞😖

In Australia, major supermarkets 'banned' plastic bags for a time to 'sAvE tHe eNviRoNmEnT" which got the environmentalists all wet and alot of other people pissed off, so they 'reintroduced' the plastic bags but at 10 cents a bag as a way to 'keep people happy' while 'discouraging' them from using plastic bags by charging for them. I used alot of quotation marks because that was the plan all along, to pretend to give a shit about the environment while simultaneously preventing losses from giving people free plastic bags. It was a perfectly executed genius move that still goes over most Australian's heads today. Supermarkets really pulled a fast one on them.

I was at Woolworths the other day and I brought my own plastic bag from home (I reuse all of my plastic) and I handed them my plastic bag to put my items in and they said "we can't accept that. You have to buy a bag". I was shocked. Instead of reusing my plastic bag they expected me to buy one of their 15c plastic bags. WTF???!!! If they are getting rid of plastic why are they still selling plastic bags? And what's the problem with reusing my bag which I will continue to reuse? I heard that they have been refusing to use those green bags if they aren't the Wollworths ones. That's just as stupid

It is terrible that people are being abused over this. I am working in Brisbane at the moment and some of my work colleagues were complaining about the plastic bag ban a few weeks ago. I had to bite my tongue.

It’s so weird for me I’m in South Australia and we have had the bag ban for ages and we also have bottle and can recycle where they pay to recycle so when I heard how outraged people got I was like why
I mean I’ve been bringing reusable canvas bags ect my whole life

I work at a local IGA I’m my town and we are slowly taking away the plastic bags and when all the bags in stock have ran out that is it. The thing that really annoys me is people complain about not having plastic bags and the 10cent plastic bags they are plastic! We are doing a plastic ban but we still use plastic bags I don’t get it. But I have seen a lot of regular customers come in with there reusable bags or even thin plastic bags that they are even reusing which I think it is awesome.

I bought my Jute Shopping Bag in 2003 and I am still using it.

People complaining about it are ridiculous! I live in Canberra, so they've been 'banned' or have had a charge for ages. It is SO SO easy. If I had my preference, we'd have paper again.

I live in Australia and Ihave no problem getting rid of plastic bags. The problem I have is that supermarkets are looking for any way they can to profit from it.
Just after they stopped bags at Woolworths I did a click and collect (order groceries online then go to the store to pick them up) My receipt says subtotal, then below that "bag service $1.00" for three bags.
I think most Australians are all for helping the environment but they don't want to be taken advantage of in the process.

That stupidest thing is that there have been signs up for ages about plastic bags not longer being available. I’ve been using my own bags for years and I know it does take a little while to keep remembering them but you get in the habit pretty quickly. I hate getting plastic bags - even aside from enviromental reasons - reusable bags are so much more confortable to carry.

I think that grocery stores obligated to provide bags to their customers for free because the customer spends so much of their money in there store a year they also made record sales during covid and were the first to put their prices up fruit shops and butchers how much cheaper than Coles and Woolworths they are in half the petrol stations and liquor shops and are always the most expensiveI don't care whether they give you a plastic bag or some other bag but I believe it should be free because they are constantly ripping off the public and a lot of people have had enough

People will get used to it.Some will always be against change in the beginning even if it is for the good.In Belgium reusable bags have been sold in supermarkets for several years. In my supermarket paperbags are now used instead of plastic ones for the fruits one buys in bulk and weighs oneself .So more progress.

Not only are people missing out on having a great accessory to carry their store goods home in, they won’t be charged for single-use plastics at home! I have a bag that I love and, because I love the design, I’ve religiously carried it with me 98% of the time; the other 2%, I ask for a paper bag, which we now have so many of, we use them as trash can/recycling “liners” instead of the plastic bags we used to use! And I live in NM, USA - where our second state bird is the Walmart bag.

And Woolworths will now make over 100million dollars a year on the sale of these new reusable plastic bags. We are just tired of being fleeced here. Swapping out plastic for more plastic and saying they are doing it for the environment hahaha.

Where I live, you have to pay for the thicker plastic bags since a long time, but in some supermarkets, the little produce bags are still free. Fortunately, they started to have paper bags instead of plastic, so that's an improvement. I just hope even the supermarket with plastic bags will swich soon as well!

Honestly I haven’t seen anything like this. Coles and Woolworths are implementing this, so is Kmart (not sure about Big W).

I’ve decided within myself that I want to stop using single use plastic anything and finding an alternative use product that gets me the same result but I can use it more than once and it’s not plastic.

I think people are upset because there’s still plastic. It’s on our chip bags, holds our meat, holds our dairy, it holds basically everything. So they don’t get why plastic bags are banned when there’s all this plastic anyways.

I haven’t heard of people being told not to use their own bags because it isn’t the stores brand. I’m annoyed at that they’re selling plastic bags now, I know it’s sturdier and more than one use but why get rid of them if you’re going to sell your own brand? That just makes it seem like they want to get in on the movement, seem ‘green’ and make a profit.

I cringe at work at how much plastic I have to give to customers and the waste 😩 (I work in fast food)

I find it interesting that we cannot find a way to melt plastic. I live in northern nsw Australia. the inconvenience of this doesn’t really bother me at all. I think it is a good idea. However in saying this they still sell garbage bags, glad wrap, soft drink bottles.there is still plenty of plastic. The bin collection for green waste tell us to throw any of out green cuttings into black plastic garbage bags. I think this is outrageous. How can they expect to change the plastic bag epidemic if they still sell it? How can they say it’s a ban?

Plastic bags cost 5p now at Supermarkets in England! Use to be free since last year but I think should be more expensive because that way the people would think twice about getting bags for life! Greetings from London! 🇬🇧

Not to long ago I went to the grocery store and took my reusable bags with me. The freaking cashier said they were such a pain to use. I was like WOW No you didn't just say that. It amazes me how people are so ignorant about plastic. Anyway, currently working on making my own produce bags.
