These are our personal stories. We know that everyone has a different story to tell and what we experienced may be very different from what other women in other parts of Italy (or even this one) may experience.

Honestly Nicki, these chats with Elizabeth are wonderful. Aperitivo was such a great idea on your part because it frees you to talk about anything...and today's chat about giving birth was an eye opener. Bisou to both of you. Suzi

Thank you for sharing. I also endured horrifying treatment in the hospital in southern Italy after living there 3 years. It was so traumatic that we moved back to the US right after. We didn't want to go through that again. It was scary.

Nicki, that's crazy that Carlo was not allowed to sleep in the private room with you, but your mum was, especially after hearing that the doctor was freely willing to expose your privates to the other husbands. How that was completely fine with the hospital and your husband could not sleep in the room with you...Just nuts. Thank you for sharing your stories. So glad you each had healthy, lovely girls. Sending love from Napa.

OMG 🤯🤯🤯 Your stories are mind blowing. The terrible nurse and doctors. The nerve!!! I am glad both of you and your children are OK. What you went through was horrific Nicki. Love from Miami ❤🌞🌊🏖️

This reminds me of my experience giving birth in Genova 41 years ago. The midwife told me off for speaking English to my baby saying "I don't know why you are speaking English to her, she won't understand" as if she was going to understand Italian instead!

Wow, Nicki, hearing your story makes me so sad. I was a nurse in 2003 in the U.S. I cannot imagine treating anyone like that, ever. This is the polar opposite of what an experience should have been. The total lack of respect, dignity, common decency alone is appalling. I cannot imagine anyone ripping off your covering and telling you to spread your legs, in front of your own husband, let alone lone in front of strangers. What an absolute nightmare. But, as a retired nurse, I always, always encourage anyone who is going to be in the hospital for any reason to have someone there who is coherent and capable of advocating for you at all times, no exceptions. I have absolutely enjoyed your visits with Elizabeth and other friends. Please keep doing this whenever possible. Thank you for sharing your stories. Have a wonderful weekend!

You have just pulled a whole international community of mothers and fathers together. Everybody is sharing their stories and now people from anywhere on earth are even sending a prayer for each other’s welfare during childbirth. Hugs to each and every one of you. Petronella.

If you were wondering if your male audience would watch this, I can assure you this guy did. I would love to hear Skye's reaction to hearing about her birth and if she has ever heard this story.

You're both very good storytellers. My jaw dropped a couple of times when you were telling your story Nicki.

Wow. These experiences are important to share. I think because many women who have experiences that aren't perfect sometimes blame themselves. Clearly no matter where in the world you give birth or have other medical experiences, it can differ greatly. While we are not required to have a carer stay in hospital, I chose to stay in hospital with my husband when he had a heart attack. I felt lucky to be allowed but if they told me it was required, I would have been shocked.

As a midwife of 40+ years in Australia I am horrified at what you endured Nicki!
But Skye has been worth it 🥰

Whaaat?! You are both being very generous with your comments!! I'm child-free (51 years old and very happy w/ childfree life), but had it been me in those situations, I would have needed gall bladder surgery from the hulkish anger I would have experienced. 😂

I love their intense friendship bond. It is as though they have been friends through hundreds of lifetimes.
