When was Robert E. Lee? When our minds drift to the image of General Robert E. Lee, we think of the tactician and strategist, or we imagine him in his later life as president of Washington College, later to be named Washington and Lee University. But we rarely, if ever, think of his love life or his consistent flirtations with women throughout his lifetime.

Best story of Robert Edward Lee was that he took a half pint of whiskey with him to the Mexican War in case he was wounded, for medical reasons (anesthesia if a limb needed removed) and he returned from the War with the bottle unopened.

You should do one on Grant. His life and ups and downs trounced Lee by far and in many ways were complete opposites. Grant was a nobody from the Midwest while Lee was the patrician of Virginia from (and married into) an esteemed family. Grant never dated until he laid eyes on his future wife at a friends house and she kept him steady his whole life... and the love letters between the two are amazing. They truly were “soul mates “.

I'm not surprised. I read a book (can't remember the name or author) over 35 yrs. ago that described Lee as a lady's man. One of the things the book mentioned was that Lee trained one of his horses to rear when he gave it a certain signal. He would do this when he was riding in the presence of women he found attractive so he could impress them with his ability to ride such a spirited horse. His father, Lighthorse, also loved women. He was a little chip off the bigger, older block.

Excellent, all too often we forget that great historical figures were people just like ourselves. Thanks for giving this window on Lee. Jackson would be another interesting to give some personal invites. From what I have read, his private life was much different than o one we see in history books.

What is interesting is the parallels between Lee and George Washington. Washington enjoyed female company and had even written a letter to an old flame that was rather sexy for the day. It also included comments by Martha, so attempts to turn it into some sort of scandal have failed, it being an old fellow reminding an old lady how hot she was back in the day. You also don't mention Lee's religious beliefs, and that is important unless we subscribe to those being hypocritical or a cover for his illicit activities. I'm really not all that surprised, as a life of discipline and denial surely needs some innocent outlet, and I am reminded of an incident where somebody asked Socrates why he liked the company of beautiful women so much. He wondered why it was necessary to ask.
