Let’s go back to 2013. A regular season game between the Lakers and Spurs, except the Lakers are 15-19 in the Kobe Nash Gasol Dwight Howard season. Dwight Howard made Lakers fans mad then and now too. The Spurs like always were doing great. This would be the year they make the finals, and lose to one of the best shots in NBA history. But that just tells you the level the Spurs were at.
So on January 9th, 2013, the Lakers visit the Spurs. Sometime in the game, after Kobe takes a shot, Tim Duncan goes, “Kobe’s out here shooting all the balls”. Kobe being Kobe took offense to that and said “I remember beating you guys a couple of times in the playoffs.” Duncan replies with “Yeah you guys got us a couple of times.” Kobe kept going saying “You know what, my ring count is a bit higher than yours.” This exchange might’ve come after this block that was called a foul with Duncan just confused. At the time Kobe had 5 rings, Duncan had 4. Kobe later described this whole interaction as two old dogs barking back and forth at each other.
Now this comes as a surprise. Of course Kobe responded, cause it’s Kobe. If you know anything about Tim Duncan, you know he’s not the one to trash talk. Like he’s just not. Look at this video of Joey Crawford giving Tim Duncan technicals for him being on the bench and him laughing through it all the way for being thrown out. There’s examples of Duncan actually giving his opponents advice on how to shoot better. Shaq said that Tim Duncan looked at him like he was bored and that he couldn’t intimidate him or get a reaction. He was the silent type that just took everything in stride. So for Duncan to say anything is just out of character. But this isn’t a normal relationship. Kobe’s always said that the Spurs forced him to step up his game at an early age.
In fact if we look at the battles between Tim Duncan and Kobe Bryant, they’ve played a total of 82 games. A whole season of games, like just what. And that includes 30 games in the playoffs. The Lakers and Spurs have had many battles throughout the years. The Kobe and Shaq years, Tim Duncan was dropping 30 and 20, but the Lakers were too much in the 2001 Western Conference Finals along with 2002, 2004, you get the jist. Tim Duncan won 2 series against Kobe in 1999 in a sweep and 2003. There were so many incredible performances over that time period like when Kobe dropped 45 and 10 in game 1 in the 2001 Western Conference Finals and then Tim Duncan dropped 40 and 15 the next game. Like Tim Duncan had a 34 point, 25 rebound game in the playoffs. Like these are just some ridiculous stats. The Spurs won the 2007 NBA finals, and in 2008 would be a slug fest with the Lakers winning in 5. Tim Duncan averaged 22.4 points, 17.4 rebounds, and 4.8 assists while Kobe averaged 29.2 points on 53% shooting. Just wow. These two were really rivals, without the animosity. So this is really the first time we heard of anything said between Kobe and Duncan.
So here we are, two older heads going at it. The Spurs are up big and maybe it’s the words Duncan said, maybe he’s pissed about the Lakers losing, probably a bit of everything but he gets really fired up from this layup, so much so that he gets a technical. And then he hits this on Duncan. From there, it’s all Kobe. He scores 14 in that third and the Lakers claw their way back in the game. Also, this stat was shown, yeah. The fourth quarter would also be really heated. Stephen Jackson would hit a couple of threes and get a couple of technicals, and get thrown out. Kobe keeps the Lakers close in the game, Earl Clark, yeah he’s actually hitting shots and the Lakers, after being down by more than 15 are now within 3. And with 10 seconds left. Yeah the Lakers lose. Kobe couldn’t make the last shot, but this would’ve been the series we got in the playoffs plus Howard and Gasol if Kobe hadn’t gotten injured. And you know Kobe would’ve been motivated to beat Duncan and Spurs to make sure Duncan wouldn’t catch up to him. Duncan actually scored 0 points in the second half with some solid defense, Kobe scored 19, just another day in the office at age 34.
