I think this is seriously his most personal film to date. Knowing that he is somewhat bipolar goes a long way to explaining how this, I think, is how he sometimes views the world and does/doesn't cope with it. I loved it and also love your reviews. Keep em coming :)

What a fantastic review
I've watched a number of reviews on this film, and none of the reviewers really ever seem to get the point that this movie is trying to make, and instead focus on the more superficial qualities.

This was an awesome review. I just stumbled across your channel and I have been very impressed. I gotta be honest, a lot of internet film reviewers haven't watched a lot of classic movies. You have and it shows in the maturity of your reviews. Plus it's refreshing to see someone not go nuts over every comic book movie franchise. I hate it when a film reviewer puts a comic book movie with very rare exceptions in their top 5 movies of the years. So thank you and yes F*CK the fanboys. I think Terry Gilliam has been largely forgotten in this day and age although he is arguably a huge influence on the visually dense big budget movies of today. Think of today's films and rewatch Munchausen and Brazil. A large criticism of those films at the time was there was too much going on in the frame. Seems Gilliam was just a head of his time.

This was the first time I'd ever seen or heard of a mainstream Hollywood movie that features Romanian-language dialogue.
I like most of the cast too.
And while I love French actresses and actors in general, I did find Mélanie Thierry rather unbecoming and lame; but then again, she was somehow what Terry Gilliam was looking for, as the alternative to her would've been Jessica Biel.

I luv your review. You truly dig Gilliam & understand his world, like me. I also thought it felled short compared to his greats. I was as fluid within the journey as others. Terry's films can feel like a cool oncoming acid trip with deep intricate philosophical concepts often hidden in the visuals & metaphor. This left me understanding it but not enjoying the trip so much. The lead was almost good in being unsettling that he left me cold & distant although I share his same conflicts as the Everyman character. I want Terry's ideas to flourish so I wish the film was more effective in terms of the emotional impact. This roller coaster was a bit rough. I luved Dr Parn...Tideland...etc. and Brazil at a prer college screenings & fan down the halls praising his genius. Finakly... I just wanted to like it more. Woud luv to chat sometime. Like your headspace.

Finally saw this yesterday.  Good, not great.  Def not Gilliams best work. I really liked the female lead.  Your review is pretty spot on as usual. .

On another note, I watched some extras from 12 Monkeys about how they chose some sets (since I live in Philly now) and it's ruined a bit of the magic now.  With low budgets (vs hollywood), I now see why Gilliam uses these old abandoned places to film his movies, and now I notice it.  While there's some creative choices, much is doing with what they have and winging it.  Ruins some of they mystery.

Seriously, this was one dull film. The protagonist was dull, the romance completely unbelievable, the teenage kid often just annoying. And the set design looked cheap. I thought everything but the church had a horrible set design.

The end was wonderful - but it took way too long to develop life into these characters.

This for me was a bit of a mess of a film, the story is strange slow and dull. It's visually stunning and well thought out but the film struggles to keep you interested - style over substance
