I only recently watched this movie once so this is a very simplified theory. I think most of the movie is a delusion. When he dropped the call is when he lost himself and he’s been searching ever since for balance. Each character is representative of parts of himself as he’s gripping the edge of sanity. Bob is his adventurous childlike self, the woman is compassion, love, and human connection. The boss is possibly the sense of community and friendship. Haven’t really thought these out tbh.

The church could be him trying to get back to his spirit and the sense of Self in Jungian terms. The Christ within us. The black hole is something we all have within us we want to avoid. Entering The Void(Choronzon) and losing yourself in the process. The technology is just representative of what’s sending us all down this path. I’d have to watch again to really pick apart what I think. I’ve been searching analysis for this movie and I don’t see anyone other than yourself really digging into it. It went over most peoples heads but I love Terry Gilliam. His movies are extremely esoteric and aren’t for everyone.
